Meeting Shantay was so energetic about 4 years ago we launched on social media and Shantay was our empowerment speaker for a virtual summit. Her love for women's empowerment ran deeper than that. We discovered she was fully vested into giving back and serving the women and youth through her award winning nonprofit organization. Here's what she told us during this interview:
1.Who are you? What do you do and How long have you been in business?
My name is Shantay Carter. I am a Registered Nurse, Founder of Women Of Integrity Inc., and Best Selling Author of Destined For Greatness. I have been a Registered Nurse for the past 19 years. My specialty is Orthopedics, Trauma , and Bariatrics. I am a mentor , and public speaker as well. In 2010 I started my non profit. Women Of Integrity Inc.,is a non-profit organization geared towards educating and empowering women of all ages. In 2017 I became a self published author of Destined For Greatness..
2. How did you end up there?
In 2010, I was going through a dark time in my life . I had just went through a very bad break up, and was consumed with so much negative energy. I fell into a depression, and it began to affect my relationships with my family, work, and friends. At that point I knew I had to make a change in my life and channel that negative energy into something positive. Hence, I created Women Of Integrity Inc. I created Women Of Integrity Inc. to be a support system and resource for the women in my community, especially the young women, so that they wouldn’t have to go through what I went through. I also wanted to use my life experiences, and nursing skills to educate, empower, and give them the confidence that they needed to accomplish their dreams and aspirations.
3. Tell us about a challenge you have had in business and how you have
One of the biggest challenges was getting people to support in the beginning, and believe in our mission. In order to overcome this, I had to put my feet to the pavement and really network. I went to other organizations and people’s events to spread the word about WOI. I collaborated with other community organizations to build partnerships and community relationships, that would help spread the word about us and help us grow. There were a lot of late nights, and sacrifices made to get us where we are now. November 30th, 2019 , we will celebrate 9 years of serving the community.
4. What do you believe is an important factor in success for entrepreneurs?
even if it's something you are struggling with.
An important factor in entrepreneurs success is, believing in yourself and believing in your brand. If you don’t believe in your brand/ business, how can you expect other people too. Confidence is important as well. You have to stand by your mission and vision, even if no one else gets it.
5. How do you contribute to women's empowerment?
I contribute to women's empowerment through the services that we provide through WOI. We are known for our annual Prom dress Drive and Giveaway, annual Prom Makeover Project, Annual Women In Business Brunch, and annual community BBQ in the summer. We also partner with a local High School’s after school mentoring program. We work with 9th-12th grade girls on a weekly basis. I also mentor new nurses , and young women in the community on my own time. WOI has also become a platform that our members and other women in business, can pilot or grow their business through utilizing our network.
6. Anything coming up you want us to know about?
We just celebrated 9yrs of serving the community. Dec 2019- March 2020 will be our annual Prom Dress Drive, March 2020 will be our Annual Women In Business Networking Brunch, April 2020 will be our annual Prom Dress Giveaway, and June 2020 will be our annual Prom Makeover Project.
